Originally, man clearly used bird wings as a way to help design wings for manned flight. Some aspects of bird wings certainly exceed what we can accomplish with our current technology. Birds have the distinct advantage of an almost infinitely variable wing planform and airfoil. I just saw a video about bird flight on Youtube that shows a revealing aspect of avian flight that you may find of interest. There are many variables in wing geometry that directly affect the utility of the wings performance. The interesting thing about bird wings is, did they evolve into the shapes they are in today for survival? For the ease of procurement of their food? Or is it, perhaps, their adaptation to the environment they are currently living in? Maybe a combination of these things. The Duckhawk has been clocked at over 175mph in a dive. Was it going after food or trying to escape a predator? The Albatross soars for hours on end, sometimes sleeping on the wing. Incredible, if you think about it. Many things can be learned by these creatures as it applies to our airplanes and their performance characteristics. Which one would YOU like?

Thanks Randy. My next post was going to be a discussion of bird wing planform and how they make their living. I think the links you posted get that done.

I read them. Even though I am not a glider pilot, I found this information about the bird wings very interesting. Thank you.
