Microsoft and Artificial Intelligence for Sailplane Flight

Post

This month's RC Soaring Digest has an interesting article about work that Microsoft is doing on artificial intelligence (AI) and sailplane flight. The concept of an airplane learning how to "think" and react to the environment on it's own and remember those experiences for the next time it encounters them or something similar, is so cool and at the same time a bit scary. The title of this post may be misleading a bit in that although they are using a sailplane for this work, clearly that is just a tool to develop the AI technology. The link to the magazine file download is: http://www.rcsoaringdigest.com/pdfs/RCSD-2017/RCSD-2017-09.pdf

Enjoy the AI article and look through the rest of the mag at the article and photos of the Wood Crafters Sailplane Gathering and the full scale sailplane event in the Czech Republic. Cool stuff.

BTW, RC Soaring Digest isn't always just about soaring stuff. I know some of you think that those of us who are into sailplanes are a little peculiar, but often RCSD has articles that would be of interest to any RC nutcase or lovers of airplanes in general. This could be a site you want to bookmark.

I just noticed that the magazine can be viewed on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/RCSoaringDigest

Sorry I've forgotten how to insert a link you can simply click on. You'll have to put the address in your browser

Thanks for the info on the AI work by Microsoft. Surprised in a way that they chose an RC sailplane for their work. Of course when you think about what even we as RC pilots have to learn and react to it's pretty complex. The potential uses of AI are pretty science fiction in nature. Hopefully it isn't a bad science fiction movie scenario. As usual this month's issue of RC Soaring Digest is great. Man I'll bet that wood crafter's gathering was a wonderful event. Wish I could attend things like that.

Very interesting. I could see how that might be helpful for landing on acft. carriers and the  sketchy little runways found in the far corners of the world. I think most carrier acft. have some sort of auto-land feature.

It's been windy as heck up here, might try some late season slope soaring on the hills behind the house. I noticed some birds gliding back and forth across the ridge yesterday.

Nah, the Twin Otter could do it. Just push the auto-land button.
