Nostalgia gliders website.

Post

I was looking at the older 1970's and 80's wood glider kits and came across this website full of older gliders. Some are still in production.

We need more gliders, like this.

some cool balsa builds.   I hope to one day have a laser cutter so I can draw up and do things like that.

Well hurry up Paul!  I'm getting older and want a Bowles Baby Albatross kit before I croak. Not the best thermal machine around, but such a cool airplane.

Yeah well, if I could sell that old truck, that would help enormously.  Or any of the other stuff I am trying to offload…  seems it's impossible to sell anything anymore.

It has a nice woodsy look to it but the glide ratio................

Yeah the glide ratio of the original isn't very good. But, the fuselage can't be contributing that much drag. I suspect that the antiquated airfoil is a little to blame. Perhaps a mild increase in aspect ratio and span, with a modern blended airfoil, could help a bunch. Gotta admit, it is a good looking glider.

Might not hurt to lengthen the tail moment a little bit too. Done with care those changes wouldn't mess up the character of the airplane. I think the plans offered in Model Builder years ago probably had an E205 airfoil. It was about the time that that one was in popular use.

Here is a very interesting article on Hawley Bowlus and the Baby and Super Alabatros gliders. The final design used some interesting structural features from the designers of the sailplane on my avatar.
