radio's now...

Post

It has been a while since I sold all my stuff.  Just wondering what is 'new' in radio's over the past couple years.   Or if people are still sticking the name brands...  I have briefly looked and seen the openTX stuff from frsky and the like that appear to be pretty impressive systems for a low cost.

I don't have experience with the open source transmitters, but I think that Randy has a Tactic and likes it. Maybe he'll chime in here. The costs are lower than most of the big name brand stuff. I'm still using Spektrum, and with the receivers available from other sources the prices aren't bad now.

I'm not familiar with the open source tx either but I have read once you can past the programming their awesome. Jim, what brand rx are you using with spektrum? Is it orange rx from hobbyking?

yeah they are 16 channel, and you can assign anything to anywhere and make your own mixes.  apparently extremely popular with the multi-rotor fliers.

Can plug them into your PC and do the programming/mixing on that as well.

Voice and noise (MP3) notifications for events and telemetry stuff.   Amazing stuff for 200 bucks.

AJ, at this time I'm using primarily original Spektrum receivers. I have a couple of orange ones, but they have not been used as yet. I'm wondering about their park flyer size "full range" receivers that have no satellite receiver. I have a spektrum one like that in my Aspire, but one of the  antennas is considerably longer than usual for one of their receivers of  that size. It has worked flawlessly at distances that were scary far away.

My Tactic 4 channel receiver has no external antenna and I flew the Jabberwock with it until it was almost OOS(Out Of Sight) with full control. :)

I have two bee's almost done…   the radio is interesting.  by default nothing is set… so to do elevons, I stick 'elevator' on channel 2 and 3, one with a negative value… then 'add' an aileron mix onto each one, adjusting the +- value as needed to get them moving the right way.

More complex that pre set up stuff, but much more powerful in terms of custom configurations.

It sounds like the open source stuff may not be the best choice for a rank beginner, but certainly good for the "old timer" pilot.

I can't believe you've almost finished 2 bees since you got back from the east coast. You be a fast one Mr. Paul. How're you covering them?
