Would anyone be interested in joining a glider club to replace the "Colorado Gliders" that has been closed? Your ideas and thoughts are most welcome. Randy

Will do, thanks for a vote of confidence, Cliff. This could be an informal group within MMAA or separate. It could be totally flexible. Whatever you think.

I guess I need to clarify something, because I think I may not have explained this correctly. The old Colorado Gliders website was started by one of our members (Michael Thompson) who has moved out of the area. Michael was on our Board for a while. Along with Dale, Paul, and I he was one of the people who made the Western Colorado Slope Challenge a reality. So, the CO Gliders site was not an organization as such. In the past, when we had a very active group of glider guiders, we discussed this very thing. Our thought at the time, when the Western Colorado Slope Challenge was sponsored by MMAA, was to make a special interest group of sorts within MMAA. Staying within the Association is the strength in numbers thing you know. The glider guys are really the only identifiable group of active pilots in MMAA that have a unique focus. This has been true for well over a decade. At the time we thought it would have no negative impact on the other activities of the Association. Personally I still believe that to be true. If the glider guiders wanted to sponsor some kind of competition, then we'd probably need to have some internal discussions, to make sure that we're protecting the interests of the Association. I didn't and do not see a down side in it for MMAA.

You guys have hit on a good idea there. The western slope and eastern UT have nothing going as far as RC events, so any emphasis sounds like a good thing.

That would be a good idea. If we could get together for some fun flying, maybe some Hi-Start launching or some winch launch would be fun. The motor gliders could have limited timed motor run events, things like that. Oh, don't forget aero towing is possible, too.

Forgot that I purchased the Butterfly powered sailplane from the club a while back. I think it only needs a main spar connecting tube to be ready to fly, so maybe I will be able to soar sometime soon.

Thanks, Andrew, we would love to have you fly with us sometime, when we're out soaring. The Butterfly is a very capable glider and is a great teaching machine as well. Which propulsion system does it have?

Thanks Randy, looking forward to it! It is nitro, not sure what size. Need to pull it out and give it a once over. Anyone know if the rod between the wings should be a wood dowel or ???

It appears to be a hardened steel joiner rod. I looked through the manual and they did not reference what material it was made out of. Here is a builder's photo of the rod.[br][br]

The photo of the joiner rod would be typical for the time period the airplane was designed. Regarding the sailplane "squadron". I think we need to have some kind of separate spot on the home page for it, and place the sailplane threads primarily in that location. If we simply continue to pile sailplane stuff with everything else, it will get lost in the shuffle. Since we're going to make this a sub group in MMAA, what would we call it. The Western Slope Soaring Society would be a name more suited to a fully independent group. However, we may be able to work with that idea in the context of MMAA as the parent organization. Let's toss some ideas around. Since this thread started based on the soaring society idea, maybe we should restrict the discussion to that subject. Randy, I like the Bolivar idea. Bet we could even come up with a kit to auction. First, it may pay to put a bit of an emphasis on the two sailplane days we have scheduled for each month. If we get our own guys out to discuss this, it could be very helpful.

Perhaps, we could even have a couple of locations to fly gliders if someone was so inclined to locate them. These ideas are the planting of some seeds to see if they grow and mixed with some good soil and moisture, they might. If not, then a little help with some fertilizer wouldn't hurt! We could show some short articles on how to recognize lift and/or thermals and where they might be located. There are plenty of good ones at the model field, you know. We could discuss how to stay in the thermal/rising air and climb like magic. Magic Carpet ride? Rising up on a carpet of air. The neat thing is it's all solar powered. As long as the sun shines, you'll have the energy to climb.
