Sailplane Talk; All things thermal and slope

OK, it used to be Sailplane Sunday, but one of the sailplaners can't make Sunday, so. Check the calendar. This is a monthly open fly for fun sailplane day. Through the summer and possibly the winter, it'll be thermal activity. Come early to late spring flying in the big wind the slope will be the location of choice. We will be starting sailplane activities around 10:00 so get the noise makers out of your system early. If there is a significant time conflict, which based on the summer so far is highly unlikely, the sailplane folks can start a little later. In fact as the days get shorter, the thermals are likely to start to pop later, so the start time will begin later accordingly. We hope to work our way into using the winch again, and include ALES, high start, and aerotowing (if we have any sailplanes ready for that). Depending on the situation, sailplane flying may take place at a location other than Centennial Field. This is most likely if we will be winch launching. If things go as expected, there may be a second day scheduled during the month for a more competitive flying activity. We need the activity folks, so with a few of our members ready to fly regularly in an organized way, we are off.

I'll be there as well with the Telemaster, if anyone would like a tow or two. I have received clearance. Randy

Ah, you mean that your live-in controller has agreed to let you go?

Yes, under much negotiation, for the club, you understand, she said, " I don't care, do as you wish". I said, " thanks, see ya!". No questions asked. The art of fine negotiations is learned at a very old age, I might add. Wouldn't you say so, Jim F.?

And here I am with no sailplanes :( If I can get the Spacewalker finished I'll slap together an ARF or something.

As for ARFs: Our experience so far is that the Aspire and now the Spirit Elite are good choices. The elite would be especially good for towing. I'd love to try a BOT, especially if modified for ailerons so it would aerotow. Just for having a great flying day, my electric Aspire has proven itself to be worth the whole $69 bucks for the airframe. They still sell it with the stupid brushed motor, but swapping that out for a good brushless makes it come alive without much expense. These units are all wood, so they fly well and are easy to repair. My standard Aspire has tons of air time, a bunch of bad landings that would have broken the heck out a foamy, and is still going strong. Lotsa good ARFs out there Gary. We'd love to see you join the fold. You and Sabin would have a blast. I'd love to see 2 sailplane days/month. Had a great time yesterday. Bagged it at about 3. Just too whipped by then and my neck was telling me it had enough.

For you silent flyer types, check the calendar. On the 27th we will be having a sailplane fun fly. We'll start about 10ish have a potluck. And an informal contest. Gotta find those Centennial field frog suckers. Those big thermals are a hoot.

We have seen trash and small dogs and cats get sucked up into the netherworld. So, if you can fly a brick, it will soar. Only at the MMAA, Centennial model field.

Hey All, we had a good time, today. Jim Z. thermalled up and John K. towed up 3 times , on the aero-tow, with his Spirit Elite behind the Telemaster. It was a fun day! Randy

Flying thermal duration sailplanes is such hard work.
