Vandalism at the Flying Field, Again

Post

I was at the field yesterday with the representative from the Black Canyon Land Trust who was inspecting the condition of our conservation easement areas, when I noticed some damage to the Job Box that contains our sailplane winch. I also found some damage to the lock/hasp on the south side of the small cabinet, basically right above the Job Box. They had nearly beaten through the hasp on the cabinet, but did not get it open. They destroyed the lock on the Job Box, and damaged it so badly that I'm not sure how we're going to get it open. The tool that was used was a steel bar that we had laying next to the cabinet with some rebar. It took a good deal of energy and probably time for them to do that amount of damage. I think it will take some on the spot welding to repair the cabinet. At this point I don't know if it will be possible to open the Job Box without cutting it open. From the look of things, I believe they scoped out the mower too.

The locks on the north side of the cabinets were untouched.

I had walked most of the property yesterday, and no one had driven around our fence. So, someone either walked in from the road, one of our guys forgot to close/lock the gate, or (I really hope this is not the case) one of our own did the damage. Since, prior to the fence and gate theft had been a major problem, it is critical that we always remember to close the gate and lock it properly. Please double check the lock before you drive away.

BTW, the Black Canyon Land Trust was satisfied that MMAA was living up to it's agreement regarding protection of the easement areas.

We went flying yesterday afternoon and saw the damage. They certainly trashed our cabinets. I looked at the job box & I think we can beat it back into shape enough to make it useable again. Probably time to lock up the mower.

Yesterday evening I visited with one of our neighbors at the flying field and I think I now know who damaged our cabinets. Apparently for a while recently there was a guy living out of his car at the BLM parking area on 6200 road just after you cross the Selig Canal. They found out that he'd been stealing gas and other things from the folks living out there. I'd bet that he was the culprit. I forgot to ask if he'd been arrested, but at this point it probably would not matter if he had been.

I got the mower running yesterday afternoon and mowed down some of the largest weeds on the runway.

Thank you for mowing the weeds, Jim. Without you, we would have had to call this guy. I think he needs to stand guard over the airfield also.
